Movie Review: Battleship

So its experiment day again (Wednesday), and its time to go see a movie. When i logged on to Silverbird PH website last Friday i was estactic when i saw that Battleship one of the movies i mentioned in my post 5 Movies to look Out for was now in the cinemas. Due to mixed reviews from some of my fellow movie lovers at Filmophilia and having a kinda low rating on Rotten Tomatoes i was apprehensive at first but i decided to have faith in the movie… (i know, that kain tin…. na human being).

Battleship is based on the old board game which  is a guessing game for two players. It is known worldwide as a pencil and paper game which predates World War I. Brought to the big screen by Hasbro the company that brought the Transformers to the big screen, Battleship is directed by Peter Berg and written by Erich Hoeber and Jon Hoeber who do a good job of transforming a board game into a movie and giving it a good story line to keep the movie going. The cast include but are not limited to Taylor Kitsch as Lieutenant Alex HopperAlexander Skarsgård as Commander Stone HopperRihanna as Petty Officer Cora ‘Weps’ RaikesBrooklyn Decker as SamTadanobu Asano as Captain Yugi NagataLiam Neeson as Admiral ShanePeter MacNicol as Secretary of DefenseJohn Tui as Chief Petty Officer Walter ‘The Beast’ LynchGregory D. Gadson as Lieutenant Colonel Mick Canales and Jesse Plemons as Boatswain Mate Seaman Jimmy ‘Ordy’ Ord.

Them wise guys at NASA have discovered a planet with the right kind of conditions that earth has and initiate a project called “PROJECT BEACON” that will send a message to the planet saying “hi”. The planet replies all right by sending their emissaries to come say “hi”. Alex Hopper, brother to Stone Hopper is recruited into the Navy, while dating Sam daughter of Admiral Shane. >>>> (i.e fast fowarding by the way) Alex, Stone, Raikes and the rest of the NAVY head out the annual naval games where in the process the encounter the aliens. Now the have to withstand the alien armada or forget that humans ever inhabited planet earth.

Battlefield is a sci-fi, action movie that is coming in the shadow of transformers but tries it best an d holds its own. In her first major role in a movie, i  must admit Rihanna did not do too bad, not bad at all. So all you Rihanna fans out there  can like to go see her performance. There was a scene where they actually played the game and i must say it was cool. The action is good, the aliens tech and transformation where not bad at all. All in all Battlefield tried and must commend Peter Berg for doing a wonderful job.

Few things i learnt from this movie and confirmed; The Japanese are smart so don’t be forming ITK (for my non-nigerian readers that means I Too Know) else you’ll get burned, Read your books more (Alex used Sun Tzu’s The Art of War on the aliens which was cool),

Rating: 6.7/10

Cinema Worthiness: Its worth the time. Go see it.
