[Movie Review] John Wick (2014)

Action? Check. Headshots? Check. Bloody? Check.

Don’t Set Him Off

THE BRAINS: Directed by Chad Stahelski and David Leitch, written by Derek Kolstad, the cast includes Keanu Reeves as John Wick, Michael Nyqvist as Viggo Tarasov, Alfie Allen as Iosef Tarasov, Willem Dafoe as Marcus, Adrianne Palicki as Ms. Perkins, Lance Reddick as Hotel Manager, & Ian McShane as Winston.

THE PLOT: John Wick focuses on a retired hitman who comes out of retirement after his former employer’s son steals his car and kills his dog which was a parting gift from his late wife.

ANALYSIS: John Wick is a great movie and Kolstad does a good job of ensuring that the one liners and moments of comedy are delivered at just the right moment. Casting Reeves as John Wick was a great idea as he fits the character nicely with his actions speaking more than words, which I believe the writer was trying to achieve. Reeves aside, the supporting characters played their parts well enough making the movie enjoyable. Acting aside, the visuals were great as were the fight scenes in the movie. The scenes of gunfight and hand to hand combat? One word. BLISS! (That’s to be expected seeing as the directors are stunt coordinators)

The Man Who You Send To Kill The Boogeyman
The Man Who You Send To Kill The Boogeyman

Wick’s portrayal as a legend among his peers was well played out in the movie via the action scenes and the way he delivered his executions. All in all, John Wick is a true action movie that will have you enjoying it. A little spoiler I must throw in was the way the underworld organization was portrayed in this movie with them having code of honours that could not be broken no matter whom you were. Plus the number of headshots. Gerald Butler am sorry but I got a new icon to look up to. 😀

Borrowing the lines of Craig Mathieson who reviewed this movie on Rotten Tomatoes, “In terms of plot and performance, John Wick is cleanly predictable, but the execution is impressive.”

VERDICT: 8/10 (Makes for good viewing in the cinema and having a copy when it comes out on Blu-Ray/DVD)

Viggo Tarasov: I heard you struck my son today.

Aureilo: Yes, sir, I did.

Viggo Tarasov: May I ask why?

Aureilo: Well, sir, he stole John Wick’s car and, uh, killed his dog.

Viggo Tarasov: [pause] Oh.

Viggo Tarasov: In a bar, I once saw him kill three men… with a pencil.

John Wick: How good is your laundry?

Hotel Manager: Am afraid no one is that good.

John Wick: I thought not

Viggo Tarasov: He’s the guy you send to kill the Boogeyman.

Viggo Tarasov: It’s not what you did son, it’s who you did it to.

Iosef Tarasov: That nobody?

Viggo Tarasov: That nobody is John Wick.

Police Officer: You working again?

John Wick: No just sorting some stuff out.

Let me know what you think of the movie.
